January: Picture Inspired by Song

The song is a mashup of the songs "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine and "Call It Off" by Tegan & Sara, featuring vocals by the lovely Kristina (and Kate, as usual). Full size image here.

About the project

On December 14, 2010, Marina tweeted the following: "And this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart: You shall love your crooked neighbor with your crooked heart." Kate, a mashup enthusiast, replied, "BEST DAY EVER!!! You just did a mash-up with POEMS, and it WINS, and now I wanna steal it and make a chorus to a song."

Two weeks later, we exchanged Christmas gifts. Inspired by Advent Conspiracy, Kate didn't want to give or receive material gifts. So Kate gave Marina a song, and Marina gave Kate a drawing.

Kate sang a mashup of the poems "As I Walked Out One Evening" by W.H. Auden and "i carry your heart with me" by E.E. Cummings.

Marina, unaware of this, drew the above picture, which contains text from both poems (as well as words from Emily Dickinson, The Killers, Tool, and another E.E. Cummings poem.)

We had unintentionally used the same inspiration for each other's presents. This reminded Kate of something Marina had told her about a year earlier: 35MM, a collaboration between songwriter Ryan Scott Oliver and photographer Matthew Murphy. In this project, RSO wrote songs based on Murphy's photographs and vice versa.

"MARINA," Kate exclaimed, "WHY DON'T WE DO THIS?"

And so it began.
